According to The Huffington Post author Carina Kolodny, “Atlanta’s sex trade was worth a whopping $290 million in 2007 alone. Miami’s sex economy was worth $235 million, and Washington D.C.’s $103 million” (Kolodny par. 4). These prostitution statistics are alarming given the fact that prostitution is only legal in one place in the United States: Nevada. The sex industry is an ever-expanding illegal business. Because prostitution is already prominent in the United States, the argument over the legality of prostitution has presented itself in recent discussions. While advocates for prostitution legalization believe that legalizing prostitution would be beneficial, the legalization of prostitution would negatively affect the United States. Prostitution should not be legalized because it would increase sexually transmitted diseases, increase human sex trafficking, expand the corrupt sex industry, increase underage child prostitution, and increase physical and mental abuse.
